Mission Statement
The purpose of this publication is to encourage student participation in the creative arts at Kent State University at Stark; to provide a venue for publishing their creative work; and to provide education and training in editorial and publishing processes for the Canto staff. "Creative arts," for the purpose of this publication, include poetry, short fiction, creative nonfiction, and the visual arts. Students shall publish Canto annually. We welcome all Kent State Stark students to participate as contributors, staff members, or both.
Editorial Policy
We accept short fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction*, and art.
Canto will not accept work that is deemed inappropriate for publication by Kent State Stark, including work that is excessively sexually explicit or contains language that is beyond the realm of what is considered appropriate in a higher-education setting.
Material that is inflammatory in nature or incites hate toward any group will also be rejected.
Students who have graduated/will graduate in the Spring or Summer of 2018 are eligible to submit work to Canto 27.
All rights revert to contributors upon publication.
To ensure fair and impartial evaluation, Canto will operate by blind review: The identity of the author or artist will not be known by reviewers. Editors and staff members may submit their work for consideration, but they will not review their own work. The comments of reviewers will remain confidential; Canto does not provide critiques for works that were not accepted for publication.
Our submission guidelines can be found here.
*Creative nonfiction is a genre of writing that includes works based on facts or actual experiences rather than imagination. This can include biographical or autobiographical works; memoir; and personal essays.
