Reader, The road between the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth volumes of Canto was a long one, much longer than the staff who worked on the 2013 publication intended. While the publication was not able to continue production then, it’s my sincere wish that this volume of Canto will be the first of many more. Instrumental in this resurrection was the hard work of our Faculty Advisor, Dr. Jayne Moneysmith. In addition, I must thank my classmates from Dr. Moneysmith’s Editing and
Publishing course: James Brenner, Ali Crum, Sarah McGill, Susan Merritt, CaeLynn Nussbaum, Kathy Sherry, Molly Singleton, and Brian White. The return of Canto couldn’t have come at a more relevant time; the world of 2018 is very different from the world of 2013. Freedom of expression is more important now than ever, and this version of Canto comes into the world to a national environment that is, at best, apathetic (and, at worst, openly hostile) toward the arts and humanities. I hope that the work enclosed within this book will work, in small part, toward challenging these attitudes and underlining the power of literature and art. To this end, I must thank our Dean, Dr. Denise A. Seachrist, for her staunch support of Canto, and her consistent recognition of the importance of art in our campus community. I would also like to thank Katie Baer, our Technology Advisor; Dr. Marie Gasper-Hulvat, our Art Faculty Consultant; and Brielle Black at External Affairs in addition to the Editorial Staff and Readers who worked on this publication. In addition, the staff of Duncan Press, and in particular Sharon Belknap and Jud Parker, worked tirelessly to assist us in completing this publication. Of course, all who submitted their art, photography, poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction deserve recognition as well; their contributions are the lifeblood of this publication. And, finally, I would like to thank you, the reader, for picking up Canto 26. In doing do, you have decided to support the arts in your campus community, and for that I am eternally grateful. Thank you all, John C. Polles Comments are closed.
